This masterpiece mosaic collaborative art based on my photo of the Dallas skyline was made by the kids at Lakewood Elementary for an auction.
The Masterpiece Mosaic of Dallas
Recently, Blis Freeman, a parent from the Lakewood Elementary School PTA contacted me about a photo I took of the Dallas skyline at night. She told me about a fundraiser she started four years ago. For the fundraiser teachers create works of art with the students and auction them off at the Lakewood Home Festival. She said that in the last four years, they have raised about $50,000. This money goes directly back to the school to help the teachers with teaching supplies. She said this year she wanted to do a unique project with her 5th graders. They decided on making collaborative art where each student will paint a portion of a picture. They then put all the paintings together to form one piece of art.
This year, she wanted them to do the Dallas skyline. After a search on Google, she found the photo below on my Flickr Photostream and loved it. She contacted me and asked if she could use my photo for their art auction.
I was probably more excited than she was about the idea. I thought it was so cool that a bunch of kids will paint their interpretation of one of my photos. The PTA then has an event where they auction off the artwork at a festival. They do this to raise money for their school. Of course, I totally supported them in this project by giving them the photo to work with. They made a large print of the photo. They then cut it up into a bunch of squares. Each kid painted what they saw in each square. The teachers then glue all the squares together and create the beautiful piece of art you see above.
The auction was a huge success and the piece the children painted ended up being sold for $2,000! It was such an honor to have my art used to encourage and support the education of children.
