This is a photography documentary that explores how neighborhood gentrification is transforming a Dallas neighborhood called Old East Dallas.
Part of my project is to capture the process of gentrification during all the various seasons of the year. The neighborhood changes its look and mood as the weather changes. Capturing it throughout the year helps us see how gentrification looks from different perspectives. This post covers two different days I went out to take photos in February. The first day was a nice day with sunny and cool weather. The second day was a day after one of Dallas’s biggest snowstorms.
While on my walk, I encountered the house below that was being prepared for demolition. The houses are generally cleared of furniture, the trees around the house are cut down, and then the house is knocked down by a giant bulldozer. There’s something kinda tragic to me about that. A house that was a home for people for over 60-80 years ceases to completely exist.
When I first started this project six years ago, the house below was one of few modern houses in the neighborhood. It sat there on a street of old houses as an indicator of what is to come. It’s interesting to see how this house is now surrounded by rows of townhouses. I doubt the owner of this house imagined the neighborhood would go in that direction.
I took the photos below a day or two after a massive snowstorm. Snow, to me, is soft, pure, and beautiful. The snow made the neighborhood look quaint and cute. With this in mind, I thought it would be interesting to capture the gentrification in the snow. It contrasts interestingly with the destructive process of neighborhood gentrification.
