During my 4 day stay in Vueltas, I had the opportunity to get to know people and walk around a lot on the rural streets taking photos. I was really surprised at how pretty the rural town was in Cuba after leaving Havana. It was far more peaceful, clean, and kept up. There also weren’t a lot of people standing around in long lines like in Havana, everyone seemed to be busy and had things to do. Also, fortunately for me, it was mango season, so I got to eat a lot of delicious fresh mango along with some of the best coffee I’ve ever had.

I seized every opportunity I had to go on walks to capture rural Cuba street photography. There were so many wonderful and interesting scenes for me to photograph. The people I encountered were generally open to me photographing them and rarely seemed bothered by it. Fortunately, I speak Spanish fairly fluently, so I was able to communicate with the people there and answer any questions they had about what I was doing.

I did encounter people who were exhausted and frustrated. It seemed like most of the people I met were trying to find a way to leave Cuba and go to the US, Europe, or South America. I thought it was sad that so many people felt that oppressed by their government. I truly hope things get better politically because it’s a beautiful country, culturally and ecologically. Overall though, I loved visiting Cuba, it was such an awesome experience I’ll never forget. I hope to go back again.
