The Moon

Full Moon over Dallas

I am simply a moon, reflecting the Sun‘s light.

People often imagine what the earth would be like without the moon, after I took this photograph of the moon over Dallas I wondered what would the moon be like without the sun. Perhaps it would be just a gray rock floating in space with no earthly night to glow in.

In the first chapter of Genesis God said He created man in His own image. The moon is in the image of the sun, both bear a wonderful spherical shape. The differences are great though, like their sizes, the sun is massively larger than the moon. The moon relies on the sun’s gravity for it’s orbit, the sun relies on the moon for nothing. The sun produces light, the moon only reflects the Sun’s light.

In I John 4:8 it says that God is Love. The Sun is light and the moon is just a reflection of its light, like how we are mere reflections of God’s love. The moon cannot shine without the Sun, we cannot love without God.

The closer the moon is to the sun the brighter it shines. How close are you to God? How much of His love is shining through you into the lives of others? Are you in the light or in darkness? Are you living in love or in fear?

  1. Wow Matthew…I absolutely LOVE this!! What great thoughts, and so very true!! Made me think of this verse, ” Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.” ~John 1:3-5
Most inspirational, and what a great analogy!

  2. I appreciate the clarity and simplicity of this work. I enjoyed the contrast of gold on black. as well.
